Cover of the album Music Has The Right To Children by Boards of Canada

Boards of Canada - Roygbiv

My musical pet peeve, the fade-out ending, long used as a cop-out by songwriters who can't be bothered to think of a proper ending, is finally of real use here. This song never actually ends - it just recedes from view, ready to be heard again the next time the clouds part. This is one of the songs that established Boards of Canada as my favorite band of all time. The sound design is simply beautiful. There's no other word for it. Roygbiv captures in a small way the wonder of childhood, of a time where every little thing feels like a discovery, for better or for worse, and it does it with only a single spoken word, a barely intelligible exclamation of the word "lake!" taken from a Sesame Street short. Musically, the song is a wonderfuly intricate miniature, with every instrumental line capable of standing on its own, yet coming together into a whole greater than the sum of its parts. It's a tiny little songwriting miracle, and I love it. Listen to it on YouTube!
